2015-kathryn-becker-1Susan G. Komen® Miami/Ft. Lauderdale is saddened by the loss of Kathryn Becker, one of eight founders of the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale Race for the Cure®. For more than a decade, Kathryn courageously fought metastatic breast cancer. Her battle ended when she passed away earlier today.

Kathryn was part of the Affiliate’s founding Band of Warriors who organized our community’s very first Race for the Cure at Miami’s Bayfront Park and established our Affiliate. Their passion and determination to bring the Race to Miami has had a profound impact on the way breast cancer is viewed and treated in Miami-Dade, Broward and Monroe Counties. That very first race, and the ones that followed, have saved thousands of lives in our community and contributed to groundbreaking national breast cancer research, some of which takes place in South Florida. Kathryn was honored at the Affiliate’s Inaugural Faces of a Warrior Survivor Luncheon in September, along with the seven other Race founders.

2015-race-founders“Today is a sad day for Komen Miami/Ft. Lauderdale,” said Executive Director Cathy McCarthy. “There’s no question Kathryn will be deeply missed, but her impact will live on in everything we do,” she said.

Final arrangements are pending.
